Alexei Mordashov Biography
Alexey Mordashov was born on September 26, 1965 in Cherepovets, Russia. He graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Engineering and Economics in 1988 and, in that same year, began his career at Severstal (formerly Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant). Early in his career, Mr. Mordashov held the positions of Senior Economist, Chief of Labor Economics and Management in Mechanical Engineering and Maintenance Shop N1, and Deputy Chief of the Planning Department until his appointment to Director of Finance and Economy, which he held from 1992 to 1996. Mr. Mordashov has served as CEO of OAO Severstal since 1996. Influential in the Russian business world, Mr. Mordashov has been a member of the Entrepreneurs Council of the Russian Federation Government since 2003, a member of the Russian-German workgroup responsible for the issues of strategic economy and finances since 2002 and the head of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs’ (RSPP) Trade Policy Committee responsible for Russia’s joining the WTO and reforming the customs policy) since 2001. Mr. Mordashov’s achievements have been acclaimed worldwide. In Ernst & Young’s annual Entrepreneur of the Year contest, Mr. Mordashov was named winner in the category “Municipal Activity in the Enterprise Sphere” in 2003. Also in 2003, Business Week named Mr. Mordashov as one of the top 25 European managers, entrepreneurs, economists, politicians and innovators in its Top Managers category.
In 2001, Mr. Mordashov received an MBA degree from the University of Northumbria, United Kingdom. He was granted an honorary doctorate degree from the Saint-Petersburg State University of Engineering and Economics (formerly the Leningrad Institute of Engineering and Economics) in 2001 and from the University of Northumbria in 2003.
He is fluent in German and English.
